At last he went to the best of mountains, the indestructible Gandhamādana. There he saw his father Kāśyapa engaged in austerities.

capable of splintering mountain peaks, drying up the water of rivers and whirling the worlds, as terrible as Yāma himself.

On seeing him approach and knowing his wishes, the illustrious Kāśyapa told him,

"O son! Do not commit a rash act, because that can bring sudden pain. The vālakhilya-s sustain themselves on the sun's rays. If angry, they can scorch you."
"हे पुत्र! जल्दबाज़ी में काम मत करो, क्योंकि इससे अचानक दर्द हो सकता है। वैलाखिल्य स्वयं को सूर्य की किरणों पर जीवित रखते हैं। क्रोधित होने पर, वे तुम्हें झुलसा सकते हैं।"

Therefore, for his son's sake, Kāśyapa propitiated the vālakhilya-s, accomplished performers of austerities. He explained the reason and said,
इसलिए, अपने बेटे की खातिर, कश्यप ने तपस्या करने वाले निपुण वालखिल्यों को प्रसन्न किया। उन्होंने इसका कारण बताते हुए कहा,
"O performers of austerities! Gāruḍa's endeavour is for the welfare of all creatures. He is trying to perform a great act. Therefore, please give him permission."

Having been thus addressed by the illustrious Kāśyapa, the vālakhilya-s gave up the branch and went off to the sacred Himālaya-s, in search of more austerities.

When they went away, Vinatā's son, the branch still extending his beak, asked his father Kāśyapa,

The peaks of that great mountain, adorned with gold and gems, were shattered on all sides.

The falling branch struck many trees with golden flowers and they looked like clouds charged with lightning.

With the speed of the mind, he then arose from the mountain peak. Ominous and fearful portents appeared before the gods.

Indra's vajra blazed forth in great pain. Meteors that trailed flames and smoke were loosened from the sky and descended.
इंद्र का वज्र बड़ी पीड़ा से भड़क उठा। आग की लपटों और धुंए को पीछे छोड़ने वाले उल्का आकाश से ढीले होकर नीचे आ गए।

The weapons of vasu-s, rudra-s, āditya-s, saddhyas, marut-s and other classes of gods began to fight among themselves.

Such things had never occurred earlier, not even during the war between deva-s and āsura-s. Meteors showered down in all directions,

tumultuous winds thundered and the cloudless sky made a tremendous roar. Even the God of the gods rained showers of blood.
प्रचंड हवाएँ गरजने लगीं और बादल रहित आकाश ने जबरदस्त गर्जना की। देवों के देव ने भी रक्त की वर्षा की।
Garlands on the necks of the gods faded and the sky's energy withered. Fearful masses of clouds rained down thick showers of blood.
देवताओं के गले की मालाएँ फीकी पड़ गईं और आकाश की शक्ति सूख गई। भयानक बादलों के समूह ने खून की मोटी बौछारें बरसा दीं।
The swirling dust darkened the splendour of crowns worn by the gods. Then Śatakratu, with the other gods, was greatly alarmed and frightened. Bewildered at these terrible portents, he asked Bṛhaspati,

"हे महामहिम! ये भयानक विपत्तियाँ अचानक क्यों उत्पन्न हो गई हैं? मुझे कोई शत्रु दिखाई नहीं देता जो युद्ध में हमारा सामना कर सके।"
Bṛhaspati replied: "O Śatakratu! O king of the gods! It is because of your own fault and negligence. Through the power of their austerities, the vālakhilya-s have created a wonderful being—
बृहस्पति ने उत्तर दिया: "हे शतक्रतु! हे देवताओं के राजा! यह आपकी अपनी गलती और लापरवाही के कारण है। अपनी तपस्या की शक्ति के माध्यम से, वालखिल्यों ने एक अद्भुत प्राणी बनाया है -
the bird who is the son of the sage Kāśyapa and Vinatā. He is powerful and capable of assuming any form at will and is coming to take away the somā.

The bird is supreme among the strong and is capable of taking away the somā. He is capable of achieving the impossible."

Sauti said: Hearing this, Śākra spoke to the guardians of the amṛtā, "An immensely valorous and strong bird has decided to take the somā away.

They wisely clad themselves in wonderful golden armour, expensively adorned with lapis lazuli.

They brandished diverse terrible weapons in their thousands, emitting flames, sparks and smoke,

Armed with these radiant weapons and decorated with divine ornaments, the army of gods stood there, their fears pacified.
इन दीप्तिमान अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से सुसज्जित तथा दिव्य आभूषणों से सुसज्जित देवताओं की सेना अपने भय को शान्त कर वहाँ खड़ी थी।
With unparalleled strength, energy and radiance, capable of razing the cities of the āsura-s and displaying themselves in forms as radiant as the blazing fire, the gods stood there, their minds set upon protecting the amṛtā.
अद्वितीय शक्ति, ऊर्जा और तेज के साथ, असुरों के शहरों को ध्वस्त करने में सक्षम और खुद को धधकती आग के समान उज्ज्वल रूपों में प्रदर्शित करने में सक्षम, देवता वहां खड़े थे, उनका मन अमृत की रक्षा करने में लगा हुआ था।
